The Sachet Saga: #1 The Foundations review

Clinique Stay-Matte Oil-Free Make Up and Jouer Luminizing Moisture Tint review
I seem to have been accumulating zillions of sachet samples recently. You don’t get enough product to be able to do a full review, so I thought I’d start the Sachet Saga and divide them up into a trilogy of mini reviews. Dramatic! I’ve got foundation, cleanser and moisturiser to share with you…
First up, it’s The Foundations:
  • Clinique Stay-Matte Oil-Free Make Up (£21.50)
  • Jouer Luminizing Moisture Tint (£29)

I’m going to start with the Clinique Stay-Matte in 9 Neutral. This is recommended for dry combination – oily skin types (pretty comprehensive), and received a lot of hype as a gel-cream formula that stays put all day.

As you can see, this is way too dark for me (it’s best for medium-light skin tones), so I went off texture and finish alone.
One thing that wasn’t advertised was that this is cooling on contact, which I absolutely love. I wore it over my Smashbox primer and applied with the No7 foundation brush. I’m increasingly moving away from this type of brush, but it is useful for putting the finishing touches to a liquid finish. With this formula, though, it applied perfectly and looked very smooth.

The coverage is said to be sheer-medium; I’d say it’s more medium but with a sheer feel – which for me is ideal. The finish is not actually matte – it has a more natural-dewy result which is much more current, while still feeling like it was going to stay put and not slide off my face.
I normally wouldn’t go without powder with any liquid foundation – I just prefer a more durable finish. However, with this foundation I could see myself skipping the powder altogether. On the day I wore this (around the house due to the tangerine shade), I went without and it stayed put wonderfully.
Although I only wore this one evening, I think that the price is fantastic for the result. I’d really like to try it in my shade to see how I get on – it’s definitely made the shortlist for my next purchase.

Next up is the Jouer tint which I’d been dying to try since reading about it, particularly on A Model Recommends. I’ve tried various tinted moisturisers in the past, including Aveda and Laura Mercier, and sort of hated them, from the shiny finish to the sticky feeling… However, Jouer is heralded by countless magazines and bloggers. It is oil-free, hypoallergenic, contains an SPF of 20 and is full of mineral and anti-oxidant goodness.
As a fan of mineral make-up, I thought the pigments used in this would suit me more than a typical TM, so I ordered some samples from Cult Beauty (which, incidentally, gives second-to-none service).
I received both Opal and Pearl. Opal is a very light, neutral shade which was perfect for my skin tone, whereas Pearl is more yellow and would be great for girls who tan slightly in the summer.

As you can see, this is very shimmery, almost worryingly so when it comes out of the tube (or sachet). Nevertheless, when blended into the skin the finish is natural but radiant, and is definitely best usedas a moisturiser and applied with fingers for optimal results.
I’d recommend that younger skins set this with a powder, but that may not be necessary on a more mature skin type.

The coverage is buildable – almost to a medium finish, in fact; though I still definitely needed concealer around the eyes and on blemishes. I’d use this on a good skin day and am remembering it for when I’m a little older and a little less spotty! As far as tinted moisturisers go, this is absolutely a top contender and I cannot speak highly enough of it, particularly as an acne-prone individual with very little time for the TM trend!
So there we have it, a pretty positive start to the Sachet Saga. Stay tuned for the sequel!
