 effective peels at home
-with Dana Ramos of TheSkinRegime.com
In her new book The Skin Regime; Boot Camp for Beautiful Skin, Dana Ramos not only reveals the truth about beauty products and skin care, but also provides tips on how to carry out safe and effective peels at home for far less money than salons and doctors charge.  The book’s forward-thinking, technical advice is provided by one of America’s most respected dermatologists, Dr. David Bank. (You can read the first 30 pages of the book for free at TheSkinRegime.com). Dana has been kind enough to provide us with the answers to those burning questions about skin peels (no pun intended).
Why are peels so popular?  Do they really work?
They really do – glycolic peels have been used widely for decades and are considered safe and effective for a variety of skin issues and overall improvement of the skin. Glycolic penetrates and build collagen, helps with exfoliation and regeneration of new skin cells, and can even help cure and prevent skin cancer (Click here for an article on The Skin Cancer Foundation’s website on that subject).
Who is eligible for a peel, and who is not?
Peels are effective for mild to moderate acne, skin discolorations (melasma or old acne spots), fine lines, large pores, and dull skin. Virtually everyone with healthy skin can benefit from a peel – even those with mild rosacea may benefit, but peels are not advised for people with severe acne, extremely sensitive/hyper-reactive skin, open lesions, or with other skin diseases such as eczema. Of course, it is always advised to test ahead of time on the inside of your arm, or on a small part of your face, such as on the jaw.
What happens when you get a peel?  Does your skin peel off?
Salon peels or peels you do at home should NOT create a lot of peeling, maybe only a little flaking a few days after. The strong peels that cause a lot of peeling should only be done in a doctor’s office, with a trained physician. The milder salon and at-home peels are extremely effective when administered every week or two, for a total of six to 8 peels. This way, you get great results, gradually, safely. Even if you don’t get any flaking, your skin is still getting great benefits.
There are tons of peels on the market.  Which ones are safe for at-home use?
Glycolic-acid based peels are safe. Stay away from anything else, even if you find it on the internet, because they are often too harsh and if you use them incorrectly, you can scar your skin! The beauty of glycolic acid peels is that even if you use a preparation that is too strong, the worst that can happen is some irritation – no permanent scarring. That said, you want to start with a relatively mild peel that are often around 30% buffered glycolic peels, perhaps with some salicylic acid as well, or kojic. OnTheSkinRegime.com website, I list several reputable companies that sell glycolic peels in the 30%-70% range, and would also advise asking for sample sizes.
How do you use a peel?
Follow the instructions carefully! Generally, a peel company will try to sell you on special pre-peel lotions and after-peel “neutralizers,” but you don’t really need them for glycolic peels – you can use plain old rubbing alcohol for the pre-peel, and gentle soap to wash it off.
What can I expect after a peel?
Perhaps a little redness that goes away after an hour or two, then glowing skin. If you use a mild peel, you probably won’t flake, but the great benefits of glycolic is still happening.
Is it easy?
Beyond easy. Total time: five to ten minutes.
How often can I use a peel?
Every seven to fourteen days, for a total of 6 to 8 peels. You do not want to do them year-around and end of with over-exfoliated skin: that can lead to fragile skin prone to acne or other infections.
I want to know much more, I have so many questions!
